Mega 2020 is a remastered animated music video that was excavated from a
time capsule buried by Mahathir under Sunway Putra Mall, Kuala Lumpur,
in 1987. This mysterious artefact is currently undergoing research by
experts on the Wawasan 2020 programme. Victoria Yam, a music producer
and composer, identified the song’s lyrics as being inspired by the
song, Warisan, by Dato’ Sudirman, who used the self and the yearning of
his dreams to explore his patriotism. “We believe the musician’s
sampling of the seruling and drums have been employed here to resonate
the sound of Merdeka marches”. Current leads also identify the video’s
dancer as Denise Lai, although her identity is irrelevant here.
According to an expert, who preferred to remain anonymous, her body
functions simply as a “conduit for Wawasan 2020’s ideologies and its
imagination of the ideal technologically-savvy subject”, her movements
clearly bound up with the track’s psychic pulse of nationhood. Philip
Koh and Pang Hei, two videographers who have been tasked with research
on the artefact’s visuals, identify the use of flat style graphics with
10fps stop motion at the dance’s opening sequence, as “a morphing entity
crashing into the birth of the internet” who journeys across dystopian
scenes. DNA analysis will be carried out to try to learn more about the
people involved. It is thought likely they were bored artists who snuck
their floppy disk into the capsule prior to its burial. A full report of
the findings will be published in due course.
